Hello and welcome to this website on the Book of Kells!
My name is Ashley Jane Leonard. I am currently carrying out my Masters in Library and Information Studies at the iSchool at UBC, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The following bibliography has as its aim to examine the book of Kells from the perspective of the History of the Book. As such, elements such as authorship, purpose and manufacture of the manuscript will be examined. Furthermore, the lasting historical significance will be discussed. The Book of Kells as found in other media will also make up part of the examination of the manuscript in light of the History of the Book. Following on from that, a brief mention will be given to the restorations carried out on the manuscript and how it is being preserved today by Trinity College Dublin. This will include a reflection on the facsimile made of the Book of Kells in the 1980s. The sources referenced throughout the website can be found listed on the page titled 'Bibliography'. For anyone interested in the subject, this bibliography is an excellent place to start. As an additional note, each menu item must be clicked in order to view that particular page ; some of the menu items also have sub-menus linked to them, which will appear on hovering your cursor over the main menu item. (I only mention it here because it is not as obvous as it seems and the structure of the website took me a little while to get used to!) _________________________ This website was designed by Ashley Jane Leonard as part of the requirements for an assignment for the class LIBR 548F: History of the Book. A template provided by weebly was used ; some additional hand coding was also used in the customization of the website. _________________________ The image to the left is of Folio 28v, and is a portrait of St. Matthew. The image used in the banner is Folio 130r, Incipit of Mark ; it has been inverted to lay on its side. Both images, along with many others from the Book of Kells, are available here : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Kells |
